Interior designers have finally got their hands on Britain's prisons as will be shown when the first purpose-built women's jail for 30 years opens next week in west London.
The privately run Bronzefield women's prison at Ashford in Middlesex features an attractive beige and fuschia colour scheme devised to give a "less intimidating and a more domestic feel" than is found in many male prisons.

Forensic scientists have called their first strike, over a 1.1% pay offer, for Wednesday. It also comes amid growing dissatisfaction with government plans to privatise the Forensic Science Service (FSS).
They argue that privatising the prestigious Home Office agency, a world leader in the field of DNA analysis, would be detrimental to the quality and independence of the service.

Up to 17 prisoners may have escaped from custody while private security firm Reliance was on duty, it has emerged.
The firm's managing director has been questioned by MSPs at the Scottish Parliament.
Tom Riall told the Justice 2 Committee that so far six of the releases can be blamed to some extent on Reliance.

Police around the world are planning to monitor conversations on internet chat rooms so they can stop paedophiles from grooming their victims over the web.
The idea emerged at a meeting in London of the Virtual Global Task Force, which was set up six months ago to make the internet safer for young people.
