Police in England and Wales recorded a 12% jump in violent crime over the past year and a 1% rise in crime overall, according to latest police figures.
However, the British Crime Survey - which the Home Office regards as more accurate - suggests that crime in general actually fell by 5%.

California's entire penal system - beset by labour and financial troubles - could be taken into receivership, a federal judge has warned.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has just negotiated a new pay package with the state's prison staff, part of his ongoing attempts to cut the budget.
But Judge Thelton Henderson has told Mr Schwarzenegger that the deal cannot go ahead, and that courts could take over.

Britain's top judge has warned that courts must remain "vigilant" to prevent state anti-terrorism measures unlawfully infringing human rights.
Lord Chief Justice Lord Woolf said the system of justice was "particularly important" when there were so many security precautions.
