The home secretary has announced sweeping changes to the way the police perform child protection procedures and demanded the suspension of a senior officer in the Humberside force.

European police are meeting in The Hague to look at ways of tackling the rising phenomenon of "honour killings".
They aim to set up a pan-European unit to combat the killings and crack down on related issues such as trafficking.

British Transport Police's organisation is "impoverished and inadequate", HM Inspectorate of Constabulary has said.
With the sole exception of London Underground, train operators had been reluctant to fund the force to the required level, its report added.

A senior manager at Kilmarnock Prison was taken to hospital after being stabbed in the stomach. The jail, which was opened in March 1999, holds 500 men on medium-term sentences.
The Prison Officers' Association has frequently voiced concerns about staffing levels and the safety of those working at the prison.
