Building relationships between local government and prisons
Middlesbrough, Wednesday, 9th July 2003, 9.30-4.30
People in prison come from local areas and return to them. Without access to housing and employment opportunities in the local community their chances of committing further crime will be high. All prisons are in the area of a local authority, yet there are few formal relationships between prisons and the structures of local government.
This conference will
- Consider the benefits and practical implications of bringing local authorities and prisons closer together.
- Explore how the effective resettlement of ex-prisoners can contribute to strategies to reduce crime and disorder in the community.
- Examine successful practice and in particular the work that has been done in Middlesbrough to arrange for the nearby prisons to contribute to their community.
Contributors will include
- Ray Mallon, Mayor of Middlesborough.
- Sir Jeremy Beecham, Chairman, Local Government Association.
- Martin Narey, Commissioner for the Correctional Services.
- Dr Andrew Coyle, Director, International Centre for Prison Studies.
This conference is part of the Restorative Prison Project. For details contact:
