Criminologists believe they have found a new way of predicting where burglaries are likely to happen.
The programme - called prospective crime mapping - has been set up by the Jill Dando Crime Institute.
Their research shows properties within 400m of a home which have already been burgled, are at higher risk for up to two months after the initial incident.

Violent crimes recorded by the police rose by 11% in the last quarter of last year, Home Office figures show.
The government said much of the increase was due to greater reporting and recording of low-level thuggery - which rose by 21%.
Overall crime levels remain stable, the figures show.

Police should not detain very drunk suspects unless officers make major improvements to the way they deal with them, a watchdog has warned.
The Police Complaints Authority (PCA) found alcohol was a factor in two-thirds of 60 deaths in custody.
The PCA said it was "disturbed" by police failures to prevent drink-related deaths in custody, with many officers lacking necessary training.

Children as young as 13 are starting to experiment with drugs and these early users are more likely to move on to hard drugs such as heroin, the biggest-ever survey of addicts reveals.
The study discovered a big gap between the onset of drug use as a child and the point at which treatment is sought. Most addicts seek help only when they reach 25.

Young men intoxicated with drugs or drink are more likely than people with mental health problems to kill strangers, according to research published today.
The study found that contrary to popular fears, failures of the mental health care system were not to blame for the rising number of "stranger homicides" in England and Wales.
Looking at 358 cases of murder between 1996 and 1999 where the victim was a stranger to the perpetrator, researchers from the University of Manchester found that the killers most commonly had a history of alcohol or drug abuse.

More offenders to face up to their crimes
More offenders will be personally held to account for their crimes by meeting the victim face-to- face or indirectly through a mediator, under proposals announced today.
The pioneering restorative justice scheme will be extended to victims of crime, anti-social behaviour and school bullying. It has been used successfully with young offenders since 1998.

Crime is falling - because prison works
According to the latest British Crime Survey (BCS) overall crime has continued to fall over the last year. Why? And what does it tell us about Mr Blunkett's policies? The main lesson is an uncomfortable one for people of a liberal disposition who instinctively prefer to see offenders rehabilitated rather than incarcerated.

Do tabloids feed on crime fear?
Amid the confusion over what realities Thursday's national crime figures revealed, the media again found itself implicated in the crime debate.
The Home Office has suggested the way newspapers - tabloids in particular - portray crime is helping to widen the gap between what the public fears and what it actually experiences.

Violence edges up as crime drops
The number of violent crimes recorded by police in England and Wales has risen slightly, new Home Office figures show.
But overall crime levels have fallen slightly in the year to April, continuing a decline that started in the early 1990s.
However, research published at the same time suggests most people still believe crime is on the increase.
